Educate Yourself

With knowledge, we can better understand how to bring positive change to the world.

While issues of racism may be relatively new for us, Black and other people of color have lived with the negative effects of racism their entire lives. We are new to the table, but the good news is that there are already a host of resources about, written or created by Black and people of color. Explore and learn from everything that is already out there before you go to your co-worker, neighbor, or friend of color and ask them to explain it to you. I’m sure, they are already exhausted. Everyone’s experience is unique and this will take time. Be kind and patient with yourself, be open to learning and growth. Come with a heart of humility.

Listening and Empathy

Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing, that is, the ability to put yourself in their shoes, and try to understand that person’s emotions or feelings. Through empathic listening, the listener lets the speaker know, “I understand your problem and how you feel about it, and I am interested in what you are saying.”
